I have decided that I want to start using Wordpress as my blog software and am biting the bullet to try to install it - I will let you know how I get on.
Would appreciate any tips.

Great choice! You can check out two sites for some ideas - one is my business website (www.bsetc.ca) and the other is my blog design package which has a portfolio on it (www.blogdesignpackage.com).
